Zhang Yu is born in 1990 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. In 2013, he graduated from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts with a Bachelor's degree in Photography. In 2018, he graduated from the Photo Art Department of Nippon Photography Institute, Torihara Manabu seminar, and received the Most Excellent Award in the graduation exhibition in the same year. In 2020, he graduated from Musashino Art University, Graduate School of Photography, Kobayashi Norio Laboratory, and received the Most Excellent Award in the graduation exhibition in the same year. In 2017, he was selected for the 6th Hou Dengke Documentary Photography Award, and in 2018 he won the 19th Photo "1_WALL" Suzuki Risaku Award, and in 2019 he set up the Banshan Gallery, which has been exhibited in Japan, China, France and the United States.
